2024 College Free Speech Rankings 

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) commissioned College Pulse to conduct the largest survey of college students about free speech on their campuses ever conducted. Fielded from January 13 to June 30, 2023 via the College Pulse mobile app and web portal, the survey included more than 55,000 student respondents currently enrolled in degree programs at over 250 colleges. 

Key Highlights Include

• Michigan Technological University was the top-ranked school in the 2024 College Free Speech Rankings.
  
  
• Harvard University obtained the lowest score possible.
  
  
• More than half of students expressed worry about damaging their reputation because of someone misunderstanding what they said.
  
  
• More than 1 in 5 students reported
  that their college administration’s stance
  on free speech on campus is not clear.
