2025 College Free Speech Rankings 

 

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) commissioned College Pulse to conduct the largest survey of college students about free speech on their campuses ever conducted. Fielded from January 25 to June 17, 2024 via the College Pulse mobile app and web portal, the survey included more than 58,000 student respondents currently enrolled in degree programs at over 250 colleges. 

Key Highlights Include

  • University of Virginia was the top-ranked school in the 2025 College Free Speech Rankings.

  • Harvard University obtained the lowest score possible.

  • A majority of students (54%) said that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is difficult to "have an open and honest conversation about on campus."

  • A majority of students said that six of eight hypothetical controversial campus speakers should “probably” or “definitely” not be allowed on campus.
